Comments: Grain and soybean futures spent much of last week chopping sideways as pressure from ample supplies offset support from good demand. Soybean futures were hit hard on Tuesday by heightened expectations for record South American production as traders returned from a three-day weekend that saw favorable rains in many of Argentina's production areas. However, the market stabilized the rest of the week as chart support at the January price lows was held. Nearby corn futures did rise slightly all four sessions of the short week as cold weather slowed cash grain movement and export demand improved. Wheat futures were supported by export demand from the Middle East and concerns about possible winterkill damage in the U.S. Plains, but ample world supplies again kept a lid on buying interest. Live cattle futures remained the star of the livestock sector, surging again on record cash trade and technical buying, before they were hit with some profit taking ahead of Friday's USDA Cattle-on-Feed Report, which turned out to be mildly negative. Lean hog futures found support from record cattle and wholesale beef prices, but struggled to gain ground amid choppy cash hog/wholesale pork prices. Cotton futures started the week strongly on potential for a drop off in Chinese output and technical buying, but then faded a bit despite strong weekly U.S. export sales.
