Comments: Things got a bit wild in the soybean futures market last week with prices surging to roughly 5-month highs on growing concern about Brazilian production and tightening U.S. stocks. Soybean futures overheated on Thursday and reversed sharply, dragging corn and wheat futures down as well, but grain/soybean prices found new support on Friday as concerns about the turmoil in Ukraine escalated on word that Russian troops had entered the Crimean Peninsula. Corn futures managed to erase earlier losses to finish higher for the fifth straight week amid concerns about Ukrainian exports, while wheat futures cut their losses. Wheat also found support from prospects for another cold wave in the U.S. Plains after being pressured by negative demand news, including Egypt's cancellation of U.S. SRW wheat cargoes. Cotton futures ended the week mixed with a strong weekly export sales total providing fundamental support. Livestock futures had a strong week with lean hog futures soaring on support from indications of extremely strong pork demand, technical buying and ongoing uncertainty about supplies due to the U.S. PED outbreak. News that Russia planned to resume imports of U.S. pork on March 10 may have contributed to the price surge, but that export demand is in jeopardy with the U.S. threatening sanctions on Russia. Live cattle futures surged to new highs as Plains cash markets reached new all-time highs. Click on the Brock logo or call 1-800-558-3431 for more info on our services.
