Comments: Price action in grain and soybean futures was widely mixed last week as concerns about events in Ukraine and crop worries gave wheat futures a strong boost, while soybean futures collapsed under pressure from the seasonal shift in export business to South America and signs of weakening Chinese demand. Corn futures were basically caught in the middle between wheat and soybeans and spent the week chopping sideways. Nearby corn futures did break a streak of seven straight higher weekly closes. Gains in Chicago wheat futures came on heavy commodity fund short covering amid growing uncertainty about U.S. production. Soybean futures were hit hard by speculative profit taking after Monday's USDA report failed to provide traders with fresh bullish news. Losses were extended on reports of major cancellations of Brazilian soybean cargos by Chinese buyers due to negative crush margins. Livestock futures gained more ground with lean hog contracts continuing their rocket-ride higher as a significant tightening in U.S. hog supplies boosted concerns about PED-related losses and kept wholesale pork prices soaring. Live cattle futures posted most of their gains on Friday on support from their discount to Plains cash markets after cash traded steady to higher. Cotton futures firmed on support from a tighter U.S. carryout estimate from USDA, despite record world stocks. Click on the Brock logo or call 1-800-558-3431 for more info on our services.
