Comments: Corn futures climbed for the second straight week after Monday's USDA reports showed lower-than-expected 2014 planting intentions and tighter-than-expected March 1 stocks. Producer selling of old-crop corn stocks limited gains along with wheat futures declines. Soybean futures firmed despite record U.S. planting intentions as traders focused on tight old-crop stocks and strong demand. March 1 U.S. soybean stocks were below a year earlier despite an 8.4% increase in crop production in 2013. Cold, wet weather in the U.S. Corn Belt was also supportive for both corn and soybean futures. Continued dry weather in the southern Plains failed to support wheat futures, however, as a larger-than-expected March 1 stocks estimate spurred talk that USDA would raise its U.S. carryout forecast. Improving weather in key foreign growing areas, including Australia also weighed the wheat market. Livestock futures had a rough week with summer-month hog futures diving under pressure from commodity fund liquidation spurred by USDA's larger-than-expected U.S. inventory estimate and technical weakness. Live cattle futures were also hit by fund liquidation spurred by the hog market weakness and beef price declines that raised demand concerns. Cotton futures were pressured after Beijing lowered the selling price for China's huge government reserves. Click on the Brock logo or call 1-800-558-3431 for more info on our services.
