Comments: Renewed strength in soybean futures was the story of the week in agricultural commodity markets – and the lack of spillover strength in grain futures with both the corn and wheat markets losing further ground. Old-crop soybean futures surged to new highs on renewed concerns about tight U.S. supplies and new-crop futures tagged along for the ride. Concerns imports are arriving too slowly, while export shipments continue to deplete stocks spurred the price strength, but by late week, traders were starting to focus more on prospects for a record 2014 crop. Wheat futures slid again amid continued technical selling and the arrival of significant rains in dry areas of the U.S. southern Plains, even though the moisture was too late to be of help to this year's crop. Corn futures were pressured by favorable planting conditions in the northern U.S. Corn Belt were progress had been lagging. Livestock futures came under pressure from cash market weakness and technically-driven commodity fund liquidation. June lean hog futures' premium to cash helped spur selling in that market. Live cattle futures, however, lost ground even though they were already well discount to Plains cash markets. Cotton futures were hammered by the arrival of significant rains in key cotton growing areas of West Texas and further technical selling.
