Comments: Grain and soybean futures rallied for a second straight week last week on commodity fund short covering spurred primarily by technical factors and action in outside markets. Slow U.S. corn harvest progress and hot, dry weather in northern Brazil were supportive fundamental factors, while a weaker dollar and volatility in equity markets may have pushed some investment money into futures. Nearby corn futures reached a 6-week high, while wheat futures climbed to a 5-week high and soybean futures a 4-week high. The futures rally faded late in the week, though, amid improving harvest conditions in the U.S. Midwest and forecasts for an extended period of warm, dry weather there. Livestock futures action was mixed with cattle futures turning extremely choppy as support from tight supplies was offset by pressure from speculative long liquidation amid signs of world economic weakness and Ebola virus fears. Feeder cattle futures moved their $3.00 daily limit in one direction or the other four straight sessions. Lean hog futures fell sharply at midweek under pressure from plunging wholesale pork prices amid seasonal increases in hog supplies. Cotton futures gave back the previous week's gains as U.S. crop weather concerns faded and weekly U.S. export sales came in very low again.
