Comments: Grain futures action was mixed last week with corn and soybean contracts slipping again under pressure from the continued surge of the U.S. dollar, which weighed on commodities in general. Soybean futures felt increasing pressure from a large South American crop. Demand concerns spurred by bird flu fears and a drop off in weekly export sales also weighed on corn and soybeans, overshadowing Tuesday's smaller U.S. and world corn carryout estimates from USDA. Wheat futures, however, shook off dollar-related demand worries, rallying on concerns about increasing dryness in the U.S. HRW wheat belt and technical short covering. Cotton futures continued to tumble as the strong dollar raised more concerns about export demand and weekly export sales stayed soft.

Livestock futures were pressured by the strong dollar and rising concerns demand will not be strong enough to handle increased U.S. meat supplies. Widening foreign restrictions on imports of U.S. poultry due to fresh bird flu cases helped boost demand concerns. Lean hog futures led the way down on large hog/pork supplies and were hit hard by fresh technical selling after falling to new contract lows. Weekly U.S. pork production came in 10.4% above a year earlier. Cattle futures traded higher most of the week on support from a firm cash outlook, before selling off on Friday amid wholesale beef market weakness. Cash cattle markets generally traded steady to slightly weaker on Friday. Click on the Brock logo or call 1-800-558-3431 for more info on our services.
