Comments: Grain futures ended the week higher, with wheat leading the way on growing concern about dryness in the southern Plains and possible production losses.
The entire grains complex was supported by a weaker dollar, which fell sharply following the Fed's policy statement.
Corn rebounded after hitting five-month lows early in the week.
Soybeans were mostly higher for the week but gains were limited by the South American harvest and expectations of increased U.S.
plantings this year.
Traders are starting to focus more closely on U.S.
weather, and soggy conditions are keeping farmers in Delta region from getting into the fields.
This helped underpin cotton futures, which rallied strongly last week amid improved exports and technical buying.
Rice also surged, with nearby May futures gaining 50 cents on the week.
Livestock futures spent most of the week moving in opposite directions.
Live cattle surged on expectations of higher cash trade, which were confirmed late Friday, with trade mostly up $2 from a week ago in Texas and Kansas.
Nearby months soared to their highest levels in two months.
Friday afternoon's Cattle on Feed report was considered bullish, showing an 8% decline in February placements versus a year ago.
Lean hog futures meanwhile spent much of the week on the defensive on ample supplies and no sign of a rebound in the cash market.
Nearby April futures set a fresh contract low on Friday, sending front-month hogs to their lowest level in 5 1/2 years. |
