Comments: Grain futures had a mixed week with corn contracts edging higher on uncertainty about U.S. acreage and concerns about planting conditions amid excessively wet conditions in southern and eastern growing areas and dryness in the northwest Corn Belt. Corn futures hit a 5-week high on Thursday before profit taking set in. Wheat futures had a volatile week, pushing to 5-week highs on Monday before selling off under pressure from improved crop condition ratings and very poor weekly U.S. export sales. Soybean futures edged lower under continued pressure from the large South American harvest and expectations for larger U.S. plantings, but losses were limited by slow cash soybean movement and a continued strong export pace. Cotton futures also edged higher on support from expectations for lower U.S. acreage and solid weekly export sales.

Livestock futures had a strong week with nearby live cattle futures surging 2.6% in value on support from further strength in Plains cash prices, strong wholesale beef prices and technically-driven fund buying. Nearby lean hog futures, meanwhile, rose 4.8% on support from speculative position evening ahead of Friday's Hogs and Pigs report, despite continued weakness in cash hog prices. Friday's report was somewhat negative for front-end hog futures, confirming a large increase in the market hog inventory and the December-February pig crop, but was clearly supportive for deferred months as it pegged December February farrowings as well as spring and summer farrowing intentions below the range of trade estimates.
