Grain and soybean futures were firm in the final week of what was an ugly year for the complex. Uncertainty about South American conditions, and particularly heat and dryness in Argentina, was a supportive factor for soybeans and corn. Strong ethanol and export demand for corn is another supportive factor for the complex, along with wheat crop concerns in Russia. Short-covering and profit-taking and the end of the month and the year boosted the markets, several of which had made contract lows recently. The entire grains complex was down on the year, with soybeans showing the biggest loss, down 22.8% in 2024. Rice futures were down 19%; cotton down 15.6%; soft red winter wheat was down 12.2%; and corn was down 2.7%. Large crops in the U.S. and South America and a strong U.S. dollar were negative market factors in 2024, and as we look ahead to 2025, there once again is a difficult profit outlook for growers and questions in a number of crops about how much farmers will plant at current price levels. While cheaper prices have stimulated demand, for a more significant shift in market direction, producers are left to hope for crop problems elsewhere.

In the livestock complex, live cattle futures rallied amid firm Plains cash markets and forecasts calling for winter storms and bitter cold in the Plains. Lean hog futures fell sharply, tumbling on Monday with pressure from soft cash markets and weaker pork prices. However, while grain producers struggled in 2024, livestock and dairy producers had a much better year. In the front-month contract, lean hog futures were up 19.6% for the year, while feeder cattle prices were up 18.3%, Class III milk futures rose 16.2%, and live cattle futures were up 11.6%. Tight supplies and solid demand were positive factors throughout the year.
