PURDUE RELEASES RESULTS OF CONSUMER SURVEY ON FOOD PURCHASES, ETHICS

A recent survey from Purdue University examines the ethical practices of consumers and how it correlates with their food buying habits.

Candace Croney, the director of Purdue's Center for Animal Welfare Science says they want to know what influences an ethical consumer, or someone who is trying to express their values by their purchases.

She says the study looks at what those buying practices could mean for the animal agriculture industry. "Many consumers are in fact, trying to shop their values," she says. "And, what some are trying to do in essence, is move the needle within the marketplace. By their purchasing they are sending a message that says we want more of this or less of that."

She tells Brownfield while providing food that adheres to a consumer's ethical principles can be challenging, it does present opportunities. "One of the things it can potentially help us do is not just market ourselves more effectively, which is important," she says. "But really do a better job of meeting our consumer's needs and bridging the rural, urban, suburban gap that we hear so much about."

And Croney says it's important for companies and farmers that their corporate social responsibility practices are easily accessible - because consumers are considering that information when making purchases.
