MONSANTO SENDS JET FULL OF SUPPLIES TO ITS RESEARCHERS, WORKERS IN PUERTO RICO

On September 20, Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico. High winds and torrential downpours have left much of the island without power, without running water, and with a dwindling food supply.

Puerto Rico happens to be an island that Monsanto calls home. Monsanto Caribe has been on the island since 1996, and we employ more than 400 people at our agricultural research center. Our team there performs research for seed production.

When catastrophe hits an area we call home, we first seek to verify the safety of all our employees. Unfortunately, with the limited cell service and poor transportation, we still have several employees and families with whom we've been unable to establish contact. Our main priority is finding those employees and ensuring their safety.

In the meantime, we have mobilized and sent a crew of employees from our breeding, procurement, engineering and security teams, as well as one medical doctor, to the island to help assess the situation on the ground and understand the needs of our employees and the surrounding communities. We've been working with local government and the National Guard to assist in recovery. To help with this effort, we also commissioned a cargo plane, working with FEMA and other industry members to stock it with critical supplies. The plane landed today at 1:17 pm CST.
The devastation on the island is unprecedented, and the recovery will take a long time. This is a time for business, organizations, and individuals to come together and support the people of Puerto Rico.
