DAMAGE ESTIMATE FROM FLOOD SOARS TO $3 BILLION Mar. 25, 2019 POLITICO reports: President Trump on Saturday approved Iowa's request for disaster assistance as the state begins the long recovery process from devastating floods across the Midwest. Gov. Reynolds estimated the state's agriculture losses will amount to at least $214 million, and said Iowa will need additional federal aid beyond the emergency resources unlocked by Trump's disaster declaration. Rising price tag: The damage assessments from Iowa and Nebraska now total about $3 billion - and both states' preliminary estimates could rise as floodwaters recede and further accounting is completed. Other states in the region have also experienced severe flooding, including Illinois, Missouri, South Dakota and Wisconsin. The Missouri River is expected to continue surging this week, and government forecasters are warning that "historic, widespread flooding" could continue through May due to above-average rainfall and rapidly melting snow. On tap this week: As both chambers of Congress convene today after a weeklong recess, lawmakers could face growing pressure to step in with supplemental disaster relief funding or tax breaks. Flood relief for farm belt states will be in the mix when the Senate takes up a House-passed $14.2 billion disaster aid package, H.R. 268 (116). The chamber is aiming to pass the legislation this week and has teed up an initial cloture vote. Tweet |
