The Academy for Sciences & Agriculture (AFSA) Charter School is pleased to announce that Emelia Smith and Abigail Stumpner are the 2019 recipients of $1,000 college scholarships, funded by the Minnesota Corn Growers Association (MCGA).

Emelia Smith will attend the University of Minnesota to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. Smith currently serves as the AFSA High School FFA president and has earned the State FFA Degree. She is a member of the National Honor Society. "In my junior year of high school, I had the opportunity to job shadow a veterinarian," said Smith. "This experience led me to decide that I want to be a veterinarian."

Abigail Stumpner plans to attend college to pursue a career in pharmacy or medical imagining. Stumpner has served as an FFA officer and competed in the state and national science fairs. She is a member of the National Honor Society. "Seeing the complexity in these career fields sparked an interest in me that I could not ignore," said Stumpner. "I am passionate about my interests and will work hard to obtain my career goals."

"Congratulations to Emelia and Abigail on receiving the MCGA scholarship, and best of luck in the next chapter of your education," said MCGA Executive Director Adam Birr. Minnesota's corn growers are proud to partner with AFSA High School in their mission to educate the next generation of agricultural leaders."

Located in Vadnais Heights, Minn., a community in greater Minneapolis/St. Paul, AFSA is a public charter school that first opened its doors in 2001. AFSA is the only public charter school of its kind in the state of Minnesota where students from grades 5 - 12 learn about the many science and agriculture careers available to them. AFSA is adding grades K - 4 in fall 2019.

"We are pleased that the MCGA annually provides scholarships for AFSA seniors," said Becky Meyer, executive director and superintendent, AFSA. "These MCGA-funded scholarships will help Emelia and Abigail to pursue their advanced studies."
