Chicago Tribune reports:

Gregory Alan Michel was born September 22, 1941 to Martin and Berneice Michel in Boone, Iowa. He grew up on a farm between Boone and Story City until he went to Iowa State University where he met Marianne Holland, whom he married in 1962. They moved around the Midwest in the 60's and 70's, him with a career in marketing and advertising, creating print, radio, and TV ads, and her as a chemist and cancer researcher.

Although his wise and infinitely patient wife was concerned that his cushy desk job did not adequately prepare him for a life of farming, in 1977 the family left St. Louis for a farm in Iowa, just a couple miles from where he grew up. Living in Iowa, his kids were able to see their grandparents regularly, including Marianne's parents Herb and Mary Jane Holland, as well as aunts and uncles and cousins. A family "happy hour" tradition was started during the farming years, which continues today.

Unfortunately, having jumped into farming at the worst time since the Dust Bowl, in 1987 they quit farming. Greg went back to advertising and marketing and Marianne went to law school. He worked in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids at an advertising agency, CMF&Z, and after Marianne graduated from law school, they finished their careers in Des Moines before retiring to Wilmette, IL to be near all their grandkids.

In Wilmette, he became an active member of Rotary International, serving a term as President of Wilmette Harbor Rotary Club and also worked at First Presbyterian Church of Wilmette. Gregory is preceded in death by his beloved Marianne, his parents Martin and Berneice, nephew Tyler Anderson, three St. Bernards, a pit bull, numerous farm cats, and a cockatiel named Pavarotti.
