UPL ANNOUNCES INAUGURAL ALLIES FOR AGRICULTURE WINNER
Source: UPL news release

KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa. - Christine Gemperle, a second-generation almond grower in California's Central Valley, has been honored by UPL, a global leader in sustainable agriculture solutions, as the inaugural winner of its Allies for Agriculture initiative. UPL introduced Allies for Agriculture to recognize the often-unsung heroes who are advancing and transforming the industry to ensure food security.

Gemperle and her brother Erich farm in the same region where her father and his brother began raising almonds after they immigrated to the United States from Switzerland in the early 1970s. For Christine, farming is about caring for your land, developing innovative solutions and advocating for agriculture.

According to Craig Brekkas, Head, UPL North America, "Christine and her family exemplify what it means to be an Ally for Agriculture by playing a critical role in the food chain while taking care of the natural resources of their farm. From her daily activities as an almond grower to the pollinator program to implementing a whole-orchard recycling program, UPL is proud to honor Christine for her accomplishments."

Christine says, "New sustainable farming practices are often expensive, require hard work and may fail. But if it helps others in the industry, we are willing to try."

The land Christine farms is important to her. She works to take care of the land so she can pass it on to her family in a better state then when she began working it. Planting cover crops to provide a habitat for bee pollinators, improve soil health and promote better water retention is just one innovation that she has implemented in her orchards. Allies for Agriculture recognizes those who are making a positive impact in their own way, highlighting advancements such as new, sustainable ag practices in the field; innovations in food processing; efficiency in transportation and logistics; and new processes in retail. A judging panel comprised of industry leaders from partnering organizations and UPL select a winner every other month.

As part of this recognition, UPL will make a $1,000 donation on behalf of Christine to the United Samaritans Foundation, Turlock, Calif.
