AG COMMUNICATORS NETWORK ANNOUNCES PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP
Source: Agricultural Communicators Network

On Wednesday, Oct. 19, the Agricultural Communicators Network (ACN) will hold a professional development workshop in Springfield, Illinois, with a reception the evening prior. If you're a communicator, especially one who has to wear a lot of different hats on the job, this workshop will be valuable.

Sessions cover practical tips and great advice from respected presenters on social media, writing, photography and video, for all levels. You don't need to be an ACN member to attend. The program is made possible by grants from Growmark and the AAEA Professional Improvement Foundation.

Schedule:

8:00 AM - Check in
9:00 AM - Welcome

9:15 AM - The Business of Social Media and How to Make it Work for You - Social media isn't just for the people who are on your social media team, we all need to learn more about the platforms and channels so that we can confidently bring ideas to teams, contribute to discussions and strategy, and more. Duncan Alney, founder of Firebelly, a top-ranked social media marketing agency, will share how businesses successfully use a variety of platforms, increase engagement on a daily basis and capitalize on the value of video. He'll also help us stay on top of the trends and talk about what's coming in 2023.

10:30 AM - Writing/Content - details coming soon about a session from the leaders at Poynter Institute.

NOON - Lunch and Session - Telling Better Stories on the Farm. Photographer Haley Stewart will share how a loss in her family encouraged her to put her camera to work telling farm families' untold harvest stories: the families, the grandparents, the generations, the relationships. She'll share photos from her three-year photography project, Hands of Harvest. She doesn't charge a dime for her services, instead encouraging her attendees to donate to Wreaths Across America. She'll show us how anyone can put their skills to work to tell agriculture stories.

1:30 PM - Make It Work GROWMARK photographer and videographer Kate Baer will share ideas for adapting and pivoting during a farm photoshoot, including working with the lighting, timing, conditions, subjects and equipment you have in hand. She'll also offer ways to maximize the phone in your pocket for better photos and videos.

2:30 PM - The One-Man Band. Jamie Cole, creative director for Red Barn Media Group, takes us inside a video storyteller's bag...what tools get the job done in the field and in the editing suite. Plus: Some tips for cinematic storytelling on a farm editor's budget.

3:30 PM - Following the Beat: Lessons Learned in Breaking News. Jeremy Gorner, Statehouse reporter for the Chicago Tribune, is no stranger to quick-pace story-gathering, grabbing breaking news angles, digging for the right sources and asking the hard questions. When you're in situations that call for that skill set, Jeremy's session will provide you with some tips to help you succeed. He'll also share some of his own most interesting stories from his current beat, but also when he covered the Chicago Police Department and the city's breaking news.

4:30 PM - Closing remarks and adjourn

There is an event rate at the President Abraham Lincoln Springfield-DoubleTree Hotel. And the registration fee of $95 is a fantastic deal for such a great lineup of content.

The Agricultural Communicators Network is the premier professional organization for communicators across the spectrum of agricultural media-from editors, writers and photojournalists to designers and public relations professionals.
