AMERICAN FARM BUREAU FEDERATION EXPELS ILLINOIS FARM BUREAU; LAWSUIT FILED
BrownfieldAgNews reports:

The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) board of directors has voted to expel Illinois Farm Bureau (IFB) from its national organization.

The vote followed unsuccessful mediation between the two groups after IFB allowed Country Financial to eliminate the Farm Bureau membership requirement for nonfarm insurance policyholders in Illinois earlier this year. AFBF says the move violated membership agreements and will cause a major reduction in national dues.

In a statement to Brownfield, Illinois Farm Bureau president Brian Duncan says the organization doesn't want to leave AFBF and believes AFBF is abandoning more than 70,000 Illinois Farm Bureau farmer members. He says IFB offered American Farm Bureau financial resources as part of the decision to change Country's underwriting requirements, but those offers were repeatedly declined.

IFB has filed a lawsuit seeking a declaration that AFBF is not entitled to terminate IFB's membership due to a 1990 agreement between the two entities. The suit also seeks monetary damages for breach of agreement and damages sustained to IFB's reputation.

The expulsion is set to take effect on December 20, which means IFB would lose all national voting delegates and say in federal policy. It could also lose the right to use the Farm Bureau name.

The Illinois Farm Bureau hosts its annual meeting in Chicago December 7th-9th.
