University of Missouri's President Mun Choi announces the center at Mizzou's state Farm Bureau convention | The University of Missouri has announced a new center focusing on rural energy, innovation, and policy. University president Mun Choi says the Center for Rural Energy Security will focus on issues facing rural America.
"Rural energy policies have such a big impact on the producers in the state, and we want to make sure that the producers are at the table helping us define the problems and eventually the solution," he says. "This is a first of its kind in the United States, and we're so happy that we're starting it in Missouri."
The announcement was made during the Missouri Farm Bureau's annual meeting on Monday. Choi tells Brownfield the center will focus on issues critical to the future of production agriculture. "Our goal is innovation, whether it's in renewable energy or traditional fuel energy," he says. "But more importantly, the policies that will enable farmers and the agriculture community to be at the forefront of energy innovation."
While the center will be housed in Missouri, Choi says part of its purpose is to be a national model. "To develop ideas that make sense for Missourians but that can be translated throughout the United States," he says.
Brownfield interviewed Choi during the 2024 Missouri Farm Bureau annual meeting.
