JACK PAYNE NAMED TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR SOLUTIONS FROM THE LAND
Source: Solutions From the Land news release

LUTHERVILLE, MD. - Solutions from the Land announces the naming of Jack Payne, Gainesville, Florida, to its board of directors. Payne, who has been serving as a strategic advisor to the farmer/scientist-led nonprofit, will join its 12 other board members dedicated to advancing agricultural solutions to global challenges.

Ernie Shea, SfL president, says Payne's appointment to the board comes as long-time board member Gale Buchanan steps down to serve the organization in a different role.

"Gale has been a tremendous contributor to our nonprofit over the past decade," Shea says. "We are honoring his request to transition to the role of SfL strategic advisor so he can continue to collaborate with us in advancing our 21st century agriculture vision."

During his recent tenure as senior vice president of agriculture and natural resources at the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, Payne served as faculty advisor to Florida Climate Smart Agriculture Work Group, an SfL state partner initiative. In 2024, the FLCSA released its Healthy Farms - Healthy Bays: Harmony Between Land and Sea in Florida report, outlining the farmer/aquaculturist collaborative's vision for a better future for the state's water quality and conservation efforts.

"We're excited to have Jack move from being one of SfL's strategic advisors to serving on our board," Shea says of Payne. "Our board of directors supervises, controls and directs the affairs of the organization. The directors determine policies or changes within SfL, and they also help us secure funding to support the future of SfL's efforts."

Payne's background includes top administrative and faculty positions at Iowa State University, Utah State University, Pennsylvania State University and Texas A&M University. He also spent 10 years with Ducks Unlimited as its national director of conservation, spearheading the development of DU's private lands program with agriculture, its national conservation easement program, and the expansion of its Mexican program to Central and South America. He currently serves on the U.S. National Sea Grant Advisory Board.

SfL looks forward to the impactful contributions Payne will continue to make to SfL with his broad experience in education, policy, wildlife ecology and international affairs.

"Three of the biggest issues today facing the survival and quality of life for humankind are climate change, food insecurity and the loss of biodiversity, and they all are connected with each other," Payne says. "Serving on the board of Solutions from the Land provides me the opportunity to work in that space, and, hopefully, make meaningful contributions that lessen the impacts and help solve the problems."
