Source: Smithfield Foods news release Smithfield, Va. -- For the second year in a row, Smithfield Foods employees in South Dakota, North Carolina, Illinois and Virginia raised more than $700,000 to support their local United Way organizations. Smithfield's Sioux Falls, South Dakota, employees posted the highest total again this year, raising more than $512,000 for the Sioux Empire United Way, their partner of more than 30 years. The organization's mission is to lead, sustain and nurture a unified, effective response to community needs in Lincoln, McCook, Minnehaha and Turner counties. Employees at Smithfield's Monmouth, Illinois, location contributed more than $158,000 to the United Way of Greater Warren County, an increase of more than 50% over the past two years. The funds will support their local United Way in improving resilience, well-being and a sense of belonging for every individual in the county regardless of their cultural or socioeconomic background. Employees in Clinton, North Carolina, raised more than $43,000 for the United Way of Sampson County, supporting its continuing work to advance the common good by focusing on education, income and health to create long-lasting changes for everyone in the community. Smithfield's Wilson, North Carolina, employees raised $5,700 for the United Way of Wilson County, which provides support to 24 nonprofit agencies in the area. The contributions will help their local United Way provide programs and services that deliver results in the areas of education, income and health. Smithfield's employees in Smithfield, Virginia, support the United Way of South Hampton Roads and the United Way of the Virginia Peninsula through volunteerism, food drives and financial donations. These nonprofits focus on education, health and financial stability and provide services to children, support for veterans and investments in local nonprofits.
