A native of Forestburg, SD, Ron Brakke attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD, where he earned a degree in biology. In 1983 he completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School. At Augustana, Ron met fellow student Rebecca (Becky) Skalland. They were married in 1966 and recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. Ron Brakke's career in animal health began with Sioux Nation's Veterinary Supply in Sioux Falls. He later joined the over-the-counter division of Diamond Labs and moved to Oklahoma City where he called on feedlots and dealers in a six-state territory. In 1966, Ron joined Thuron Industries in Dallas, Texas which later became the Animal Health Division of Zoecon. There, he became president in 1975. During his tenure at Zoecon, revenues increased from $15 million to $125 million. The company became the premier supplier of insect control products to pet owners and livestock producers. After the sale of Zoecon to Sandoz in 1983, Ron Brakke left the company in 1985. Soon after, he started his eponymous consulting firm which grew to become the leading consulting firm specializing in the animal health industry. It continues to serve clients around the world. In 2009, Ron Brakke published the book, The U.S. Animal Health Industry: Its pioneers and their legacy of innovation, utilizing his nearly encyclopedic knowledge of animal health industry companies and their founders. In 2014, Ron was awarded the annual Kansas City Animal Health Corridor (KCAHC)'s Iron Paw award in recognition of his six decades of work in the animal health industry, presented at the annual Kansas City Homecoming Dinner, which celebrates the animal health sector. In addition to his consulting business, Ron maintained close ties to agriculture through ownership of the family farm in Forestburg, SD, where the Brakke Family keeps a part-time residence. One of his favorite activities was hosting pheasant hunts for family and business associates several weekends each fall. In addition to his wife Becky, Ron is survived by daughters, Suzanne (Mick) Moore and Dr. Rachel (Matt) Holman, and two grandchildren, Magnus and Hannah. The Brakkes are long-time residents of Dallas, TX, where they have been involved in numerous civic and charitable organizations. Memorial service will be held on Friday, August 22 at 11am at King of Glory Lutheran Church, 6411 LBJ Fwy, Dallas, TX 75240. Tweet |
