PURDUE RELEASES NEW TOOL HELPING FARMERS CALCULATE TRUE COST OF PRODUCTION

West Lafayette, IN - For most farmers, nailing down a precise cost of production per acre is a difficult task. Although broad ranges, informed guesses, and averages from several previous years are helpful, tight margin years emphasize the need for precise cost accounting.
In response to the current margin environment, a team of Purdue Agricultural Economics graduate students, with the support of the Indiana Soybean Alliance and the Indiana Corn Marketing Council, developed an interactive tool and a support helpdesk to help Indiana farmers calculate their production costs. Built specifically for Indiana and grounded in region-specific benchmarks across six Indiana production regions (North, Northeast, West Central, Central, Southwest, Southeast), it gives farmers an accurate and locally relevant benchmark.
Available at cop.farmfinlab.com the calculator guides farmers through seven cost categories: fertilizer, seed, crop protection, labor, equipment, land, and overhead costs. Every section comes pre-filled with region-specific Indiana averages. For farmers who do not have their exact input costs on hand, such as what they paid for fertilizer, seed, or crop protection this season, these pre-filled averages provide an easy-to-use and relevant starting point. For those who want a more detailed picture, each section includes an advanced option that breaks costs down, input by input, for the most accurate estimate possible.
Once completed, the calculator generates a results summary that includes a full cost breakdown per acre, a breakeven price per bushel, and a sensitivity analysis showing how shifts in yield or market price affect net return per acre. A unique code is generated at the end, allowing farmers to save, revisit, and update their information each season, making it a living planning tool rather than a one-time exercise.
