Source: AgbioInvestor news release

Midlothian, Scotland -- AgbioInvestor has published the latest update to its free-to-access GM Monitor platform, providing users with the most comprehensive and up-to-date view of global genetically modified (GM) crop cultivation, technology adoption and regulatory approvals.

The latest update reveals that global GM crop area reached a new record of 216 million hectares in 2025, representing growth of 2.5% year-on-year.

The update is accompanied by AgbioInvestor's newly published Global GM Crop Area Review 2026, which analyses GM crop adoption trends across 30 countries and 11 different GM crops.

Significant developments identified in the latest data are:

•Global GM crop area increased by 5.3 million hectares (+2.5%) in 2025 to reach a record 216.0 million hectares

•China recorded the fastest growth among major GM-producing nations, with GM crop area increasing by 79% year-on-year following the continued commercialisation of GM maize and soybean

•Brazil expanded its GM crop area to 70 million hectares, reinforcing its position as the world's second-largest GM crop producer, while the US GM area shrank by 0.2%

•Global GM maize area grew by 7.9%, reaching 74.6 million hectares

•Ghana joined the list of GM crop cultivating nations with the introduction of GM cowpea production

•Adoption of GM crops is growing in Africa

Allister Phillips, Director and Senior Seed Analyst at AgbioInvestor, said, "Moving forward, growth of the global GM crop area will likely be driven by greater adoption rates in China and Africa, with several African countries launching maize varieties developed through the TELA maize project."

The updated GM Monitor platform includes enhanced datasets covering:

•Historical and current GM crop area by country and crop

•GM crop adoption rates and utilisation trends

•Regulatory approvals for cultivation and import

•Technology adoption trends by trait and crop

•Industry news, regulatory developments and commercialisation activity

•Downloadable datasets and interactive visualisations

GM Monitor remains available free-to-access
