MICHIGAN FOOD BANKS DRIVING DAIRY DEMAND Jun. 16, 2026 BrownfieldAgNews reports: The United Dairy Industry of Michigan says farmers are helping strengthen food security in rural communities across the state. Cortney Freeland, vice president of engagement and outreach, says more than 70 percent of the dairy distributed through Michigan food banks is now being purchased. "They've shifted from relying on donations or surplus dairy in the network to becoming more consistent buying customers of dairy," she says. "There's more demand for milk and more sales. There are more nutrient-rich dairy foods that they're able to provide." She tells Brownfield it's part of a larger effort to expand access to high-quality food. "As people need to rely on our network more to help subsidize their food, this really brings together those that are committed to getting dairy to the people that need it the most," she says. Freeland says the collaboration between food banks, producers, and processors is creating new opportunities for dairy to help meet demand throughout the food supply chain. Tweet |
