DOEBLER FAMILY GENETICS NAME COMING BACK TO EAST COAST FARMERS
by Chris Torres, Editor, American Agriculturalist magazine

A new but familiar name will be available for corn and soybean shopping this fall.

Pine Creek Seed Farm in Jersey Shore, Pa., is launching 10 corn and six soybean lines under the Doebler Family Genetics name.

Chris McCracken, president of Pine Creek Seed Farm, whose great-grandfather was T.A. Doebler, said seed selection for the brand started two years ago.

"It's very humbling to do this," he said. "We've kind of put that out there to some of our growers and dealerships, and the excitement behind it seems to be great. And we're able to go back and find some of the lineage that Doebler's had success with."

Long, local history

The Doebler name dates to the 1930s when T.A. Doebler came to the Jersey Shore area of central Pennsylvania and started selling open-pollinated corn. McCracken said Doebler first sold it under a different name, peddling it to farmers in Pennsylvania's Northern Tier out of his Model A Ford.

Seed under the Doebler name started being sold in 1935. The Doebler family grew the business for decades as a regional independent seed company, T.A. Seeds.

In 2011, Pioneer Hi-Bred, then a business of DuPont, bought Doebler's PA Hybrids. The DowDuPont merger in 2017 combined more than a dozen regional seed brands, including Doebler's, under DowDuPont.

Then, two years later, when DowDuPont spun off its agribusiness division to create Corteva, it was announced that Seed Consultants would become Corteva's East region brand, essentially killing off the Doebler brand name.

In yet another brand shuffling, earlier this year Corteva announced it would be unifying all its regional brands, including Seed Consultants, under the Hoegemeyer brand name for 2027.

"There hasn't been any attention to the Doebler brand now for 10 years on the market," McCracken said. "So, we're kind of doing our small steps at this point. We're trying to show that it's a totally different company than what that brand was."

Why bring it back? Familiarity is one reason, McCracken said.
