RUSSIA SUFFERING THROUGH WORST DROUGHT IN 40 YEARS Jul. 22, 2010
Source: The Brock Report
Russia is experiencing its worst drought in nearly 40 years, the presidential advisor on climate said Monday, "The country has not seem such an overwhelming drought since 1972," Alexander Bedritsky told the state news agency RIA Novosti.
Some 14 regions across the country have been hit by an extended heat wave and an estimated 9 million hectares of crop land has been lost out of 48 million hectares that were sown.
In a recent report, USDA said all of Russia's major spring wheat districts (Siberia, Ural and Volga) have been subject to severe and persistent drought.
Private Russian analyst SovEcon now sees grain production at less than 75 million tons versus the official forecast of 85 million.
