RR SUGARBEETS BANNED BY SAN FRANCISCO JUDGE Aug. 17, 2010
BrownfieldAgNews reports:
A U.S. district judge in San Francisco has overturned government approval of genetically engineered sugar beets until another USDA review of how the crop affects other crops is complete.
The order effectively blocks farmers from planting Roundup Ready sugar beets next spring, but does not affect the 2010 crop.
Sugar industry officials expect the USDA's biotechnology regulators to come to the same conclusion as before and eventually re-clear the seed for planting. But the USDA has estimated that completing another environmental impact statement could take two to three years.
Industry officials say it would be difficult for U.S. farmers to quickly switch back to conventional seed. For one thing, it isn't clear how much conventional seed is available anymore. Ninety-five percent of the sugar beets grown in the U.S. are now Roundup Ready.
