Source: Agribusiness Council of Kansas City news release

USDA Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan will be one of the featured speakers at the Agricultural Business Council of Kansas City's Sept. 23, 2010, forum on Agricultural Sustainability Issues. The session will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the American Royal, Kansas City, MO.

"We are excited that Deputy Secretary Merrigan will attend the Council's Issues Forum," said Elvin Hollon, chairman of the Agricultural Business Council of Kansas City. "Deputy Secretary Merrigan has been a very influential voice within the Obama Administration on agricultural sustainability and food policy issues. We look forward to learning more about the USDA perspective on these issues."

Kathleen A. Merrigan is the Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Working alongside Secretary Tom Vilsack, Merrigan oversees the day-to-day operation of USDA's many programs and spearheads the $149 billion USDA budget process. She serves on the President's Management Council, working with other Cabinet Deputies to improve accountability and performance across the federal government. Merrigan brings a wealth of knowledge to USDA from a decades-long career in policy, legislation, and research related to the many missions of USDA.

Other nationally-recognized speakers who will be part of the program include:

• Sara Wyant, publisher, AGRI-Pulse Newsletter
• Rick Tolman, president, National Corn Growers Association
• Charlie Arnot, Center for Food Integrity

The Council is an alliance of individuals, businesses, and organizations associated with the extensive agricultural industry of the Kansas City region. The group's mission is to advocate growth and awareness of the food, fiber, agri-science and related industries of the Kansas City region.
