GRAINS COUNCIL CEO: CHINA'S CORN IMPORTS MAY GROW 5X THIS YEAR
BrownfieldAgNews reports:

The president of the U.S. Grains Council, Tom Dorr, says corn purchases by China may grow fivefold in 2011.

China purchased one-point-five million metric tons of corn in 2010. Dorr says that could reach seven-point-five million in 2011. But he's not sure how much of that will come from the U.S. and how much from other countries, such as Argentina.

Nebraska Corn Board ag promotion coordinator Kelsey Pope participated in the Grains Council's trade mission to Asia in early December. Pope says she was surprised at how positive the Chinese were about their U.S. corn imports.

"This last year was one of the first years they imported alot of corn from the U.S., and there was a lot of speculation from people in the U.S. as to whether that would continue. They really see it as a positive increase in their economy with importing more corn and so that should be something that increases in the future."

Pope says she was also surprised with last week's announcement that China is opening an anti-dumping investigation into U.S. exports of distiller's dried grains. She says there was no hint of any problems during the U.S. delegation's December visit.

The Grains Council mission also stopped in Japan. Pope says the Japanese continue to have concerns over GMO's in food products.

"Consumer perception over there is if food is natural or organic, it is better for you and the people there have a high disposable income and they're able to pay for food that they think is better for them. We're hoping to be able to do some more research and show the consumers this food that has GMO products in it is safe."
