NOAA: 1ST HALF OF 2011 WEATHER AMONG THE MOST DESTRUCTIVE IN HISTORY Jun. 24, 2011
Agri-Pulse reports:
Extreme weather events have marked the first half of 2011 as one of the most destructive on record, says the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
In an analysis released last week, NOAA says the tornadoes, droughts, wildfires and floods that hit the United States this spring has already produced eight $1-billion-plus disasters, with total damages from wild weather at more than $32 billion.
Agency officials say more damage can be expected, given the launch of the North Atlantic hurricane season June 1.
However, Iowa State University Extension Climatologist Elwynn Taylor suggests that current conditions might indicate a return to some normalcy, but the lingering of a persistent Pacific Ocean-based weather pattern could still play some havoc on the 2011 corn crop.
