THE PASSING OF DENNY EILERS
National Agri-Marketing Association (NAMA) reports:

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of long time NAMA member and friend, Denny Eilers (1941-2011), Iowa Photo Farm, Inc.

A Cornbelt NAMA member since 1990, Denny has been the photographer for many NAMA Agri-Marketing Conferences and will be greatly missed.

The Iowa Photo Farm was operated by Denny and Gwen Eilers. Denny served as chief photographer and Gwen was the business and production manager. They were located on a working farm in scenic northeast Iowa, raising corn, soybeans and a variety of locally grown vegetable crops.

From the "About Us" section of the Iowa Photo Farm website:

The Iowa Photo Farm is operated by Denny and Gwen Eilers. Denny serves as chief photographer and Gwen is business and production manager. And, yes, we're located on a working farm in scenic northeast Iowa, raising corn, soybeans and a variety of locally grown vegetable crops.

After providing freelance photography and writing services to clients in Atlanta and Kansas City, we moved our business back to the family farm in the late 90s. Now, where his grandfather turned soil with horses and a walking plow and his Dad farmed with a modern tractor, Denny walks with a digital camera and bag full of lenses.

If he farmed full-time, he would be a fourth generation Iowa farmer.

Photography Experience

Denny has a degree in journalistm from Iowa State University with a minor in Agriculture. He had not taken a photo until he studied journalism in college and then couldn't stop. While at Iowa State he photographed covers and feature articles for campus magazines and served a term as Managing Editor of the Iowa State Daily student newspaper.

After college he served five years in the U.S Army, including a tour in Vietnam as a combat journalist for the 198th Infantry Brigade. He photographed the cover for the first division magazine, had two cover photos on Army Times plus numerous releases through wire services. For more on his Vietnam photography go to Army Times-Duty, Honor, Country.

In the early 70s, Denny worked as a photographer and feature writer for Webb Publishing Company, a large agricultural magazine publisher located in St. Paul, Minnesota. He photographed over 30 magazine covers, and helped start the Webb Photo Library, shooting the first 20,000 stock images. The collection was later purchased by Charlton Photo in Milwaukee. Advertising & PR Experience

After Webb, Denny worked in advertising and public relations for 20 years, with agency-side-of-the-desk stints in Philadelphia, Atlanta, St. Louis and Kansas City. During this period he enjoyed the opportunity of numerous commercial photo shoots with nationally known photographers. He learned the complexity of a commercial shoot, as he was often asked to scout and setup location details. For more go to Average Farmer Doesn't Chew Hayseeds.

Denny began "working without a net" in the early 90s, providing freelance services to clients through commercial, editorial and stock photography, along with writing skills fine-tuned at leading agencies. He combines in-depth knowledge of agriculture with experience from publishing and advertising firms to bring a high level of quality and creativity to every project - from stock to personal work to commmercial shoots.
