Nov. 28, 2011 Source: WISH TV.com It wasn't' exactly the kind of emergency call someone in the hybrid seed business expects, but when top executives at Atlanta, Ind.-based Beck's Hybrids learned one of their employees was among 14 missionaries attacked in Haiti, the company sprang into action, according to our partners at The Times . "They were down there doing good work," said Scott Beck, vice president and grandson of Beck's founder Lawrence Beck. "We wanted to make sure they got home safe." Beck said Brad Downing, a company employee, called from Haiti early last Friday morning and described how his mission group from Kokomo-based Oakbrook Church had just been attacked by six armed men who attempted to take missionaries hostage. Gunfire erupted, and four members of the group, Bruce Donaldson, Rex Byers, Morgan Young and Chris Herr, suffered gunshot wounds. Fortunately, none of the injuries were life threatening. The group was eventually able to fend off the attackers, but it was clear their mission trip was over. With commercial flights into and out of Haiti a dicey proposition even under ideal circumstances, the missionaries needed help fast. "They were looking for a way to get out of the country as quickly as possible," Beck said. Beck's dispatched its company plane to ferry the group home. The plane flew first to Florida where the necessary clearances were obtained to fly into Haiti. As the plane seats only nine passenger, two trips were needed to get the missionaries out of Haiti and then two trips from Florida and back home to Indiana. Tweet |
