CONSUMERS UNION RELEASES REPORT CLAIMING 72% OF PUBLIC CONCERNED ABOUT ANTIBIOTIC USE

Congresswoman Louise Slaughter says a new poll showing that 72 percent of Americans surveyed are "very or extremely concerned" about the potential for antibiotic-resistant bacteria from antibiotic overuse in farm animals underscores the need for legislation limiting that use.
The report by the Consumers Union, the public policy arm of Consumer Reports is titled, "Meat on Drugs."
Consumers Union has also sent a letter to the USDA asking for more stringent labeling standards for meat raised without antibiotics because their "secret shoppers" found misleading and inconsistent labeling.
Since 2007, Slaughter has been trying to get her bill passed that she says "would prevent the overuse of seven classes of antibiotics (in farm animals) and has been endorsed by over 350 organizations."
