Jun. 25, 2012 BrownfieldAgNews reports: The American Medical Association (AMA) says there is no need to label foods containing genetically modified ingredients. In a policy statement adopted by the AMA's annual meeting in Chicago last week, the association says "there is no scientific justification for special labeling of bioengineered foods." The statement adds, "Voluntary labeling is without value unless it is accompanied by focused consumer education." AMA called for continued federal oversight of bioengineered crops and food. They also called for careful assessment of each new genetically modified organism by the Food and Drug Administration to ensure the product is safe. AMA says all foods, whether or not they are genetically engineered can carry potentially hazardous substances or pathogenic microbes. "History provides examples of traditional breeding that resulted in potentially hazardous foods." The resolution calls on the scientific and medical communities to continue to educate the public about biotech foods and encourages ongoing research and development in food biotechnology. Tweet |
