Dec. 3, 2012 Source: joint organization news release U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Senate Agriculture Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow (D., Mich.) and House Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas (R., Okla.) all have been confirmed as key speakers at the 2012 Farm Journal Forum, hosted by Informa Economics and the Farm Journal Foundation. With the end of the 112th Congress drawing near, each will share their unique perspectives and viewpoints on what the lame-duck session has in store for US farm policy, particularly given uncertainty surrounding the fiscal cliff negotiations and the expiring 2008 farm bill. The forum will be held Dec. 5-6 at the Washington Marriott at Metro Center. Washington, D.C. This year's forum, entitled "The Election's Impact on Modern Agriculture's Ability to Feed the World," promises to offer dynamic discussion and unique insight relative to critical food and farming issues. The forum, originally launched in 1997, has a history of assembling top-level leaders from industry, government, non-profit organization and other organizations to discuss the key issues facing agriculture. The forum will feature a panel on "Modernizing Agriculture in the Developing World," moderated by Senior Fellow on Global Agriculture and Food Policy at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs Roger Thurow, who also authored "Enough: Why the World's Poor Starve in an Age of Plenty" and "The Last Hunger Season: A Year in an African Farm Community on the Brink of Change." Joining Thurow on the panel will be: Deputy Director of Agricultural Development for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Arlene Mitchell; Senior Fellow at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs and Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign Bob Thompson; Head of Syngenta Food Security Kavita Prakash-Mani; and Iowa farmer and World Soy Foundation Board Member Randy Van Kooten.
