![]() Aug. 12, 2013 Source: Farm Journal Foundation news release Today the Farm Journal Foundation announced that its Farmers Feeding the World (FFW) initiative was awarded a $1.5 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The grant will fund a Global Food Security and Agricultural Advocacy program. The advocacy program will build a new U.S. constituency of champions for global agricultural development with the aim of advancing a priority shared by both Farmers Feeding the World and the Gates Foundation: fostering the political and public will to reduce global hunger and poverty by supporting and promoting sustainable agricultural productivity. To achieve this goal, the grant will expand Farmers Feeding the World's ongoing HungerU Tour and enable a complementary, direct advocacy outreach effort in Washington, D.C. The HungerU Tour travels to college campuses across the United States to spark conversations with students about the global challenge that hunger presents and educate them about the critical role that advanced agriculture plays in feeding a hungry world. The interactive tour also offers opportunities for students to be part of the solution. HungerU launched during the fall 2012 semester, reached seven schools in America's Heartland plus the National FFA Convention, and visited seven universities on the West Coast during spring 2013. HungerU will hit the road again this fall, visiting 16 universities. In addition to the HungerU outreach efforts, the grant makes it possible for Farmers Feeding the World to organize a farmer-led advocacy program to raise the awareness of hunger issues and build appreciation for agriculture's capacity to address the problem. "One of the principles guiding Farmers Feeding the World's activities is 'to support programs that fight hunger and poverty through sustainable agricultural development'", said Andy Weber, chairman of the Farm Journal Foundation. "We look forward to this partnership helping maximize the impact made by both of our foundations in pursuit of a shared goal." About the Farm Journal Foundation The Farm Journal Foundation is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to sustaining U.S. agriculture's ability to serve the vital needs of a growing world population with education and assistance focused on the unique interests of people and organizations aligned with U.S. agriculture.
