Source: Missouri Farmers Care news release

Missouri Farmers Care questioned the legitimacy of "Missouri Food For America," claiming the PAC, created by former politician Wes Shoemyer, is little more than a front for the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).

"HSUS can't be trusted," stated Don Nikodim, chair of Missouri Farmers Care. "They're not from here, they're not an animal shelter and they spend tens of millions each year attacking America's farm families. "Missouri Food For America" is simply another attempt by HSUS to deceive Missouri voters. Even a failed politician like Wes Shoemyer should be ashamed of selling out Missouri farmers."

Critics of HSUS point out that the nation's leading animal rights group spends far less than one percent of its nearly quarter-billion dollar annual budget on animal care. And farmer-led organizations like the National Cattlemen's Beef Association and the National Pork Producers Council have feuded with HSUS over the animal rights group's decade-long assault on farmers throughout the nation.

"Constitutional Amendment 1, the Missouri Farming Rights Amendment, is a common-sense way to protect Missouri family farmers from those who want to destroy our way of life," Nikodim continued. "So, it's no surprise that HSUS, the number one threat to Missouri farmers, would create this Trojan Horse in an attempt to deceive voters and stop this essential effort."

The Missouri Farming Rights Amendment, which will appear on ballots this year as Constitutional Amendment 1, forever guarantees the rights of Missourians to "engage in farming and ranching practices."

"Missouri's family farmers work tirelessly to feed our families, and millions of Missourians rely on agriculture for their jobs," concluded Nikodim. "But we are constantly under attack from extremists like HSUS that use legislation, lawyers and lobbyists to try and end our way of life. If we want to keep Missouri farming, and save thousands of jobs, we must pass the Missouri Farming Rights Amendment."
