![]() Sep. 28, 2015 BrownfieldAgNews reports: The U.S. hog herd continues to rebound from PEDv. On September 1st, 2015, the USDA says the total hog and pig inventory was 68.395 million head, up 2% on the quarter and 4% on the year. That's the highest inventory figure since USDA started doing quarterly estimates in 1988. By weight, hogs weighing less than 50 pounds were 20.291 million head, unchanged from 2014, and 500 to 119 pounders were 17.986 million head, up 3%, while 120 to 179 pound hogs were 13.080 million head, up 8%, and hogs weighing 180 pounds and over were 11.053 million head, up 9%. Market hogs were a new all-time high at 62.410 million head, 4% above a year ago. The breeding herd of 5.986 million head was 1% larger than last year. The average number of pigs saved per litter during June through August was a quarterly record of 10.39 pigs. The pig crop was 30.585 million head, 3% higher than a year ago, with farrowings down 2% at 2.944 million head. Tweet |
