Ambassador George McGovern officially opened the conference with his presentation, "The Third Freedom: Ending Hunger in Our Time." McGovern helped those attending realize the impact of giving children what many take for granted - enough food to eat and an education. Writing and design were the focus of this year's meeting, but there were also sessions offering information on management, photography and computer skills. Several authors were presenters at this year's meeting, including Patricia O'Conner, the author of Woe is I and several other titles, and Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. Two of this year's speakers hailed from international roots. David Markey of IFP Media Ltd., Dublin, Ireland, presented information about attracting readers and advertisers in a declining market. Jorgen Lund Christiansen of Skanderborg, Denmark, presented the ByLine Book Club session, discussing his book, 11 Attitudes to the Crops of the Future. In addition, this year's Summit offered two informational panel discussions. The first was a discussion by three agro-terrorism experts. The second panel was made up of farmers from across the country to let publications professionals know "what real readers want." Carl Hiebert, one of Canada's eminent agricultural photographers, amazed those in attendance with his stunning photography - even more amazing when one realizes the photographs were take by a paraplegic man flying an ultralight aircraft. During the two-day trade show, InfoExpo, agricultural companies from across the company promoted their new products and programs. The 2003 Agricultural Publications Summit will be held July 27-30 in Cleveland, Ohio. AM Karen Simon of Montgomery, Minn., is associate manager of the American Agricultural Editors' Association.
