Red River Farm Network reports:

The new executive vice president of the Wheat Quality Council is no stranger to the industry. Wheat milling veteran Dave Green will take over as executive vice president of the Wheat Quality Council, at the conclusion of its annual meeting this week in Kansas City.

Green, who recently retired after 30 years with ADM, takes over for the retiring Ben Handcock. Green says it should be a seamless transition. "I was organizing wheat tours. That part of it is easy. The rest of it to me is accounting and keeping up the contacts."

An Ohio native, Green worked for International Multifoods for eight years before his 30-years at ADM. He says the milling and baking industry is concerned when wheat prices are as low as they are this year in winter wheat country. "They cut back acreage, which reduces the liquidity and the size of the crop to choose from. They cut back on fertilizer, more importantly, they'll start reusing their seed. The growers tend to take care of the crop more when it's worth more.

"There's lots of wheat being stored on the ground and that's just not a good situation for the mills and bakers long-term." Green will organize the hard red winter wheat tour in early May and the hard red spring wheat tour in late July.
