BrownfieldAgNews reports:

The EPA is expected to announce a decision this week on petitions to waive the corn-ethanol mandate in the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS).

Tom Buis of the ethanol advocacy group Growth Energy is confident of a positive outcome for the ethanol industry.

"I think it's a no-brainer that they reject it," Buis says. "The people that have filed the waivers didn't prove what needed to be proved if you're going to waive the RFS-that the economic harm is attributed to the RFS.

"Anyone who follows agriculture or agricultural economics knows the economic harm is attributed to Mother Nature-and not just one particular use."

As to the possibility of longer-term legislative changes to the RFS, Buis feels better after last week's elections.

"The legislative battle probably got less likely because Senator Inhofe of Oklahoma was saying if the Republicans took control of the Senate, that was going to be his high priority-to go after the RFS," Buis says. "We still think there will be attempts, but I think the attempts are less likely now."

Buis was part of last week's NAFB Trade Talk event in Kansas City.
