Source: Burrus Hybrids news release

When BurrusŪ Hybrids purchased a ticket for a motorcycle raffle fundraiser for Shelby Memorial Hospital (SMH) in Shelbyville, Ill., no one would have guessed that it would set off a chain of events resulting in even more money raised for the SMH Foundation.

After the mid-October winning raffle ticket was drawn, Burrus Hybrids found itself the owner of a custom built motorcycle by Shelbyville resident Steve Koontz of Fighting Chance Customs.

"When Steve's co-worker, Vicky Wagner, was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent surgery for a double mastectomy, Steve was surprised at the out-of-pocket expenses she faced after her insurance reimbursements," said Tom Burrus, president of Burrus Hybrids. "He wanted to help, so Steve approached SMH with the idea to construct at his expense a one-of-a-kind pink motorcycle named Fight like a Girl and raffle it off as a fundraiser."

But Burrus Hybrids didn't hold the winning ticket for long. They felt that one good deed deserves another so Burrus donated the motorcycle to the SMH Foundation, which in turn sold the motorcycle back to the original owner, Steve Koontz, generating even more funds for the Vicky Wagner Breast Cancer Assistance Fund. The money helps women in Shelby County with out-of-pocket expenses arising from their breast cancer treatments.

The completely custom-built motorcycle has a Revtech 100 cubic inch engine and Revtech 6-speed transmission sitting on a Softail 250 frame.

"This is one of those situations that was totally unexpected, but really ends up making an enormous difference," said Burrus. "It's great to see the proceeds directly reaching people who really need the assistance, and need it right away."

Burrus Hybrids was founded in 1935 and has a long history of providing exceptional seed, consistent performance, and outstanding value to growers in Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Iowa, and Wisconsin. Burrus purchased HoblitŪ Seed Company in 2008 and created a strategic alliance with HughesŪ Hybrids in 2010 to further strengthen the Burrus core strategy as the premier source of quality seed corn and soybeans. For the 78th consecutive season, Burrus offers 100% free replant to guarantee farmers a growing start.
