Agri-Pulse reports:

Five major biotechnology providers signed the first segment of the Accord Agreement developed by the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) and the American Seed Trade Association (ASTA), making the post-patent process active.

"We're really pleased with the response we got," said BIO's Executive Vice President for Food and Agriculture Cathy Enright, noting that several companies signed quickly once the Accord became open for signature Oct. 31.
"That conveys the commitment that each of these companies have to this process."

Monsanto, Syngenta, Dow AgroSciences, BASF and DuPont Pioneer are all signatories to the agreement, which Monsanto's Executive Vice President of Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Jerry Steiner said provides a level of clarity and confidence for farmers wanting the opportunity to use a trait, as well as for seed companies and grain handlers.

This first part of two in the Accord is the Generic Event Marketability and Access Agreement (GEMAA), which provides a set of procedures to manage patent expiration.
