The Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc., Swine Division is addressing an opportunity in the U.S. pork industry by creating and sponsoring a program that brings women leaders together for networking and idea sharing. "For a number of years, the swine team has held a female-only swine event," said Lara Sheeley, senior associate director, Swine Marketing.

"This year, we took a slightly different approach as we hope to build more of a networking event for women in the swine industry rather than just a stand-alone meeting. As such, we rebranded the group from Sweet on Swine to Swine Link."

Swine Link - the Network for Women, by Women is comprised of women leaders who share a common desire to improve their knowledge and understanding of swine health, production and marketing. The group shares ideas, networks and helps promote activities and programs beneficial to U.S. pork producers and industry partners.

The organization held its introductory Swine Link event July 12-13 in Des Moines, Iowa. The Swine Link program included:

Opportunities to meet and network with other women and industry leaders.

The latest in swine health and production information on Swine Influenza Virus (SIV), Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED) and Porcine Reproductive & Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) from industry experts including Dr. Lisa Becton, National Pork Board; Dr. Marie Culhane, University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory; and Dr. Erin Johnson, BIVI.

As leaders in the swine industry, both Jane Fallon, Cargill Pork, and Betsy Freese, Successful Farming, shared their personal and professional stories of how they became successful in the swine industry. They both shared their tips for overcoming challenges in the market and pitfalls to avoid.

Personal and professional development programs to enhance careers.

An exclusive tour of the Better Homes & Gardens' Test Kitchen and Meredith Corporation.

The latest Swine Link event was the Swine Link Networking Session held during the Leman Conference in September in St. Paul, Minnesota. The next Swine Link event will be held during the American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV) conference in March in Dallas, Texas.

The Swine Link group plans to meet on a regular basis to provide even more educational and networking opportunities for members.
