Des Moines Register reports:

Deere & Co. will lay off 100 workers from its manufacturing plant in Ankeny next month to adjust for market demand, the company said.

The Moline, Ill.-based maker of farm and construction equipment said it notified workers in mid-August that layoffs would take place in mid-September and early November.

About 40 manufacturing workers were placed on indefinite layoff in mid-September, said Ken Golden, Deere's spokesman. On Friday, about 100 workers were notified they'd be laid off in early November. In both layoffs, manufacturing employees with the least amount of seniority were affected, Golden said.

"The layoffs were planned in line with the financial forecast Deere & Co. made in August and do not indicate new market information," he said. "These layoffs affect production employees and not skilled trades workers."

Deere now employs about 1,300 production and maintenance workers and about 630 salaried workers at the Des Moines Works.

Jim McKenna, an Ankeny City Council member, said the layoffs could create financial stress for families living in Ankeny and surrounding communities. The cuts also could dent the economies of Ankeny and surrounding communities over the long term if workers are not recalled in the weeks ahead, he said.

Earlier this month, Deere said it was planning a $15 million office building on the Ankeny campus to house 220 workers who had been moved to an office in Johnston because of growth at the plant. And in June, the company celebrated an $85 million investment in Ankeny that included growth of its research and development efforts.
