BrownfieldAgNews reports:

USDA reports the total amount of cattle on feed in the U.S. on October 1, 2013 was 10.1 million head, down 8% from October 1, 2012 and near the average pre-report guess, reflecting the continued contraction of the U.S. herd.

Placements during September were also very close to what was expected at 2.03 million head, up 1% from the record low for the month set in September 2012.

By weight, placements on cattle weighing less than 600 pounds were 475,000 head and 600 to 699 pound placements were 335,000 head, while 700 to 799 pound placements were 480,000 head and placements of cattle weighing 800 pounds and up were 735,000 head.

September marketings were 1.7 million head, 6% more than last year with one more workday in September 2013 than in September 2012.

Other disappearances were 62,000 head, down 3% on the year.

The next set of cattle on feed estimates is out November 22.
