BrownfieldAgNews reports:

USDA reports domestic commercial red meat production during December 2013 was 4.136 billion pounds, up 3% from the December 2012 total.

Beef production was pegged at 2.047 billion pounds, 1% more than last year, with the slaughter up 1% to 2.561 million head and average live weight increasing 9 pounds to 1,337 pounds.

Veal production was 9.8 million pounds, 1% above a year ago, with a 2% rise in the calf kill to 66,500 head against a 2 pound decline in the average live weight at 252 pounds.

Pork came out at 2.067 billion pounds, 6% above December 2012, with the slaughter up 3% at 9.736 million head and average live weight gaining 7 pounds to 283 pounds.

Lamb and mutton was reported at 13.2 million pounds, 3% higher than last year, with the slaughter 7% larger at 202,500 head and average live weight 5 pounds lighter to 130 pounds.

2013 red meat production totaled 49.183 billion pounds, down 1% from 2012.
