Red River Farm Network reports:

Feeder cattle markets are following the futures markets upward and setting records at sale barns around the country.

Hub City Livestock Auction co-owner Steve Hellwig says a good replacement heifer is bringing a premium. "We sold some Red Angus heifers here for $1,525." That may be the extreme, but replacement heifers have commanded very good prices.

"The big push on the replacement heifers will start about now through about the middle of February."

Overall, Hellwig says 75 to 80 percent of heifers sold at the Aberdeen market are going to the feedlot. Hellwig doesn't think heifer retention will be any more than what's normal in his area because so much pasture has been given up to crop production.
