The Iowa Soybean Association (ISA) was recognized Feb. 8 for its commitment to funding private-public soybean research during events held on the Iowa State University campus.

At a reception held prior to the ISU vs. Texas Christian University men's basketball game, ISU President Dr. Steven Leath and College of Agriculture Dean Wendy Wintersteen thanked the ISA for its investment in basic and applied research conducted by ISU faculty.

"We are thrilled about the quality of the work we do together but even more important, the strength of the university's relationship with Iowa's soybean farmers," said Leath after accepting a ceremonial plaque from ISA President Brian Kemp.

Since its founding in 1964, the ISA has invested nearly $50 million in checkoff funding to further the work of ISU scientists in improving soybean yields through better disease, insect and weed management.

During that same time, annual soybean production in Iowa has increased from 110 million bushels to nearly 415 million.

"This relationship has been a long and strong one and we look forward to doing even more in the future," said Kemp who farms near Sibley.

Wintersteen acknowledged the strength of the partnership and ISU's historical commitment to helping soybean production flourish in Iowa.

"Soybean research at the university dates back to 1894," she says. "We have a long history of working with Iowa's soybean farmers and look forward to this partnership continuing."

In addition to the reception, a ceremonial check presentation was made at center court during the first half of the ISU vs. TCU men's basketball game. The ISA received a warm round of applause from the crowd of nearly 14,000. - at Iowa State University.
